  15. <p>     DIED. Dexter Gordon, 67, legendary jazz tenor saxophonist
  16. and bebop innovator whose polished interpretations influenced
  17. generations of musicians; of kidney failure; in Philadelphia.
  18. Born in Los Angeles, Gordon learned the classical disciplines
  19. of music theory and harmony as a teenager. His public career
  20. began in 1940, when he played with Lionel Hampton and later with
  21. Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, Fats
  22. Navarro and Dizzy Gillespie. Convinced that jazz was undervalued
  23. in his own country, Gordon toured Europe in 1962 and stayed on
  24. for 15 years. His performance in the 1986 film 'Round Midnight
  25. won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
